2017 Angullong Fossil Hill Shiraz Viognier

The idea of blend red grapes (Shiraz) with white grapes (Viognier) could be seen as a somewhat strange concept. This blend originates in the Côte-Rotie appellation of the northern Rhône Valley in France. A small component of Viognier is added to the Shiraz in order to heighten the aromas of the wine. In our Angullong ‘Fossil Hill’ Shiraz Viognier, we only add 2 or 3% Viognier which is co-fermented. The result is a wine with lovely lifted artomas of spice, pepper and forest berries. There are layers of flavour with balanced oak nuances and dusty tannins which will integrate with time in the cellar.

93 POINTS “Beautifully fruited and attractively perfumed, the bouquet shows sweet raspberry, Black Doris plum, violet, almond and subtle spice aromas, followed by a succulent palate that is plump and fleshy. It is flavoursome and delectable, elegantly framed by fine-grained tannins.”
Wine Orbit, Sept 2019

90 POINTS. “Accurately fits the expected profile for this blend, with the viognier component amplifying the naturally aromatic and peppery spice of the cool climate shiraz. The fruit character is quite restrained, just-ripe cherry and plum if you had to choose, the palate medium weight and becoming grippy towards the finish.”
2020 Wine Companion

89 POINTS.  Deep, youthful colour and a walnut and dry spice aroma. The palate is solid and gruff, with thick texture and density, layers of firm tannins and it begs to be put down for a couple of years.
